A Coquitlam teenager has been arrested once again in connection with online “swatting”.
Urban Dictionary defines the act as an Internet prank, whereby someone calls 911 anonymously and tricks the system into deploying law enforcement or a SWAT team to an unsuspecting victim's home under false pretenses.
The boy, who cannot be named because he is only 17, has been charged with extortion and mischief in relation to the latest incidents that took place in Florida.
All three of these latest incidents allegedly occurred in the communities of Winter Haven and Fort Meade in Polk County, Florida. And each call was allegedly made to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, with the caller reporting a critical incident in progress. Each report led to a significant police response, and each report turned out to be false.
But this isn’t the first time the boy has been caught prank calling the police, he also pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal harassment in relation to incidents that occurred in North Vancouver last year, and Waterloo, Ont. earlier this year.
In both of those incidents, the boy is said to have harassed young women that he met online.
He remains in custody and will make his next court appearance later next week.
