Mortar shell unearthed

A man out for a walk with his metal detector in Stanley Park yesterday made quite the find – an old mortar shell.

He discovered the shell around 9 a.m. and immediately called 911 to say he had found what he thought to be a historical explosive device buried in the ground near Brockton Oval.

When explosive technicians from the Vancouver Police Department arrived, they found what is believed to be a post WWII, 3-inch by 14-inch shell.

The mortar appeared to have been buried in the ground for quite some time, and it’s still unknown how it got there.

The area was marked off to ensure the public was not put at risk as technicians unearthed and examined the shell. It was then put into an explosive containment unit, to be taken outside the city and exploded.

“An explosive device can cause serious injuries or death if not handled properly,” says VPD spokesperson Sergeant Randy Fincham.

“Anyone who finds an explosive device should not touch it and call their local police who will arrange to have the device properly disposed of.”
