People & pets escape house fires

The following is raw video shot of the fire on Cerise Drive shot by Matthias Krohn.

Early this morning the Kelowna Fire Dept. (KFD) responded to two house fires.

At around 2:30 a.m., a 911 call reported heavy flames coming from a home on Cerise Dr.

When fire crews arrived the rear of the residence was fully involved.

After confirming that all residents were out of the house, the Kelowna Fire Department initiated a defensive exterior fire attack.

Two other buildings were threatened, but only one sustained minor damage.

Three engines, one rescue vehicle, one command vehicle and a safety truck along with 17 personnel responded to the incident.

Emergency Social Services (ESS) were called to care for three adults, two children, three dogs, two cats and two guinea pigs.

Fire crews remain on scene mopping up hot spots at this time.

There were no injuries from this fire and it is under investigation.

Second Structure Fire

While crews were fighting the fire on Cerise Dr. another 911 call reported smoke in the area of Molnar Rd. and Holbrook Rd. East.

First responders reported smoke coming from the ground floor windows of 440 Holbrook East. Entry teams found fire in the basement of the structure and all occupants were able to make their way out of the building.

A working smoke detector alerted the occupants -- five people are now in the care of ESS along with two dogs and four cats.

Two engines and one command vehicle along with nine fire personnel were on scene to extinguish the fire.

Damage to the residence is extensive.

The fire is considered suspicious in nature and it will be investigated jointly by the RCMP and the KFD, which advises all residents to routinely check their smoke detectors.
