Protesters say 'no' to GMO

Around 40 people from across the province gathered on the Highway 97 overpass near Parkinson Rec. Saturday morning to protest genetically modified salmon, apples and alfalfa in BC.

The group, some wearing costumes and carrying signs, waved to traffic and received supportive honks from passing motorists.

Tanya Wahoski is a social work student from Castlegar.

"GMO's affect the entire planet," she said.

"Corporations do a great job of hiding the dangers, so we have to spread the message ourselves."

Mikko Sipponen drove all the way from Keremeos to show his support.

"I'm involved because I eat," he said.

The event was organized by Heidi Osterman, who is seeking signatures for a petition against the use of several GMO items.

According to Osterman, MP Ron Cannan has agreed to table the petitions with the federal government.

Dayleen VanRyswyk is the NDP nominee for the Kelowna-Mission constituency and a supporter of the petition.

"I don't like (GMO's), but at the very least they should be labeled," she said.

"I hope it happens eventually."
