Woman killed north of Oliver ID'd

6:54 a.m. Feb. 22 Update: RCMP now confirm Debbra Street was the woman killed while crossing Hwy. 97, north of Oliver on Feb. 20.


Feb: 20 1:30 p.m.: An unidentified woman is dead after she ran across Highway 97 into the path of an oncoming vehicle in the Gallagher Lake area north of Oliver.

The incident occurred about 6:45 Tuesday evening.

Oliver RCMP attended the crash and, upon attendance, requested additional resources from South Okanagan Traffic Services due to the nature of the incident.

Witnesses to the collision told police on scene they saw the woman run across the road from the west side of the highway into the path of an oncoming northbound black Chevrolet Impala.

Witnesses, including a physician, came to the woman's aid, however, she had suffered immediate fatal injuries.

The highway was closed for a short period of time on Tuesday evening to permit a proper scene examination by an RCMP traffic collision reconstruction analyst.

“In addition to the scene and vehicle examination, our investigators are trying to firmly establish the woman’s activities that day into the evening and up to the time of the collision. We are looking for information about her exact whereabouts and what she was doing,” stated Cpl. Bryce Petersen.

The 69-year-old male driver stopped and called 911 to report the collision and remained at scene to cooperate with the investigation.

Alcohol or drugs have been ruled out as factor in the involving the driver’s actions. No charges have been laid at this time.

The collision is being investigated by the South Okanagan Traffic Services and BC Coroners Services.
