Castlegar begins now to plan and formulate celebration of sovereignty

Filling roster for Canada Day

There never was a more important time to get your elbows up and celebrate all things Canadian than this year’s Canada Day celebration.

With a certain southern neighbour stirring the pot and threatening sovereignty in Canada, there is something you can do about it in Castlegar.

For those interested in participating as a vendor, performer, volunteer or sponsor, they can contact Castlegar city councillor Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff ([email protected] or 250-608-2655) — the chair of the cultural and civic pride committee — with noble intentions and preferences.

In a time when unity and pride are more important than ever, Castlegar’s Canada Day event offers a chance to celebrate what connects Castlegar as a community and Canadians as a country, said Heaton-Sherstobitoff.

“This is a time for us to come together … and celebrate everything we love about Canada,” she said. “It’s going to be a joyful day for all ages, and we’d love to see everyone out at Millennium Park and Ponds.”

The Canada Day celebration will take place at Millennium Park and Ponds on Tuesday, July 1. This free event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and kicks off with the singing of O’ Canada, followed by a full day of activities for all ages.

Event highlights include:

  • Free hamburgers (while supplies last) and Canada Day cake;
  • Live entertainment on stage throughout the day;
  • An interactive kid’s play zone with face painting and engaging activities; and
  • Canada Day tattoos, stickers, flags, beach balls and other fun stuff for the kids.

Seek and you shall find

To make this celebration extra special, the city is currently seeking:

  • Food vendors that are self-contained;
  • Local artisan vendors;
  • Entertainers and performers;
  • Volunteers to help on event day; and
  • Sponsors interested in supporting the community celebration (sponsors will receive recognition through our event campaign, including social media, website, newspaper, and other promotional materials).
