To read or listen to the media these days, you would think that U.S. President Donald Trump invented tariffs and that Canada had never applied them to other countries.
In fact, Canada, being a protectionist country, has always applied tariffs to imported goods from other countries. Many countries get exemptions on affected products by being a “most favoured nation,” whereas others will pay a percentage which varies from 1% to 100%.
Some goods are impacted by quotas, whereby they pay nothing or up to a certain limit, and thereafter pay a high percentage.
If anyone wants to read what these tariffs are and what goods are affected, they can read them all here.
