Trail Mayor raises concerns about cross-border traffic linked to mine proposal, battery plant

Border traffic concerns

Trail Mayor Colleen Jones has expressed concerns about the possible increase in cross-border truck traffic that could be introduced by a proposed mine and other projects near Rossland.

The mayor's comments about the possibility of increased traffic are related to both a battery plant, border crossing renovations in addition to the mine proposal.

“I am just concerned with the safety and security of it,” Jones explained during a March 24 council meeting.

West High Yield Resources (WHY) applied to open an open pit magnesium mine about five-kilometres outside of Rossland near the Canada—U.S. border.

The Environmental Assessment Office requested that the Calgary-based company undergo a full environmental assessment before proceeding in August 2024. The assessment has yet to be finalized.

The Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals hosted a virtual public information meeting on Tuesday, Feb 25, for community members to discuss the potential project.

Many residents and environmental activist groups submitted their concerns about the project, highlighting that the development would severely impact the area's ecological balance.

The Save the Record Ridge Committee presented concerns to both the Trail and Rossland city councils. The group has also expressed that WHY has not adequately addressed the concerns raised during the public hearing inquiries.

Despite the council having the opportunity to share residents' concerns with the developers and provincial representatives, they have little to no governing power over whether the project will be completed or not.

Mayor Jones says all the municipalities in the region will need to remain engaged in the border crossing renovations, battery plant and proposed mine.
