Wrong about 'wokeness'
Re. Matt Irnie's letter, ‘Wokeness' is communism (Castanet, March 20)
Matt Irnie's letter, while certainly provocative, highlights a concerning trend of conflating social progress with a long-defeated ideology.
I found it enlightening, though not in the way perhaps intended. It illuminated the persistent fear some hold towards the simple act of acknowledging the rights and dignity of others.
The letter's rhetoric echoes the McCarthyism of my parents' generation, a time when fear of the Soviet Union fuelled a climate of suspicion and paranoia. We lived through the Cold War, a period of immense anxiety and wasted resources.
As someone who served in Afghanistan, I can attest to the futility of such fear-mongering. The “Iron Curtain," when finally breached, revealed a nation built on hollow promises and decaying infrastructure, a testament to the destructive power of hysteria over reality.
Irnie's assertion that "wokeness" seeks to force acceptance of "untruths" is a vague and unsubstantiated claim. He paints a picture of a monolithic "woke left" that demands conformity and punishes dissent. However, the pursuit of social justice and equality is not about forcing beliefs but about challenging systemic inequalities and fostering a more inclusive society.
His dismissal of the documented and ongoing investigations into unmarked graves at residential schools is particularly troubling. The painful legacy of these institutions is not a matter of opinion but a historical reality that demands acknowledgement and reconciliation. To suggest otherwise is to disregard the suffering of Indigenous communities and undermine the process of truth-telling.
The true threat to democracy is not "wokeness" but the deliberate spread of misinformation and the erosion of critical thinking.
We must be wary of those who seek to divide us by invoking outdated fears and demonizing those who advocate for a more just and equitable world.
