Re. 'Dictators to our residents': Peachland council baffled by their own bylaws (Castanet, March 13)
Restrictions on multiple kitchens with stoves, in order to prevent houses from being subdivided into units without safety inspections, is both common and has been upheld by the courts as reasonable.
But, if (Peachland Coun. Glasman) as the duly elected representative doesn't like it and can convince a majority (on council) to change it, then, as the report to council made clear, she can do so.
She would not be alone in doing so, it would simply be a freely made choice to increase the risk of non-compliant suites, which might make her morally responsible if harm resulted in an illegal suite, such as from a fire that proper safety precautions could have prevented.
That is literally the opposite of dictatorship.
