I believe Canada should cancel, or at least reduce, the F-35 fighter plane purchase and buy the Swedish Saab fighter aircraft.
There is no doubt such a move would incur a substantial financial penalty, however, it maybe worth it for the following reasons.
1. The U.S. administration is proving to be an untrustworthy partner.
2. We will be subject to the US essentially controlling F-35 technology and associated maintenance and upgrades.
3. Given our geography, Canada needs a two-engine aircraft. Canada is reportedly looking at the purchase of helicopters to respond to CF-35 crashes.
Finally, Canada should reduce its ties with the US. Contracts with European countries could bring diverse trade and financial benefits.
