Trail Charles Bailey Theatre's TECK Family Series is back for another year of interactive fun

Just clowning around

The Charles Bailey Theatre in Trail is kicking off the 10th year of their TECK Family Series, designed to introduce children to the theatre in a fun, engaging way.

Charles Bailey Theatre's Vicky Jones said that these shows give children the opportunity to express themselves.

“Being in the theatre allows them to feel safe with their parents and just forget themselves for a little while,” she said. “It lets them be creative, active and playful.”

She noted that the shows are made possible through collaborations with Teck Trail Operations, the BC Arts Council, the BC Touring Council, the Government of Canada and Tourism South Kootenay.

The first show to kick off this year's series will be the "Walter Ego" show scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 23, from 3-4 p.m.

The humorous and physical theatre show for children aged 5-12 years old hails from Montreal and seeks to combine art, clowning, circus and movement through an interactive show that kids can participate in.

The story centres on a clown named Mr. Walter, who navigates his mood for the day through the predictions of Mr. Weather Reporter. But one day, the unexpected happens.

The Family series will continue with another performance to give young people a variety of live arts experiences.

On Sunday, March. 30 at 3 p.m., The Myrtle Sisters will present their show “Same Same Different” at the theatre.

Now, some of us have dreamed of having a twin, but what if that twin was so similar to yourself that people couldn’t tell you apart? The story revolves around the sisters experiencing a mix of wacky situations that reveal each one's uniqueness.

This live music and dance spectacle is about teaching children self-expression and celebrating differences with charm, shenanigans, surprises and mishaps wrapped into one fun experience.

The following month, on Sunday, April. 27 at 3 p.m., the nationally recognized children’s educators Will Stroet of Will’s Jams and Seeka of Seeka Sings will be teaming up together to present “Will and Seeka: Friends with Everyone.

The educational musical show uses sing-along choruses in both English and French to teach children about language, movement and music in songs about everyday things including food, animals, family and friends.

Jones said that she enjoys experiencing and absorbing the energy that the shows and children bring to the theatre.

“It's the energy that kids bring to the space,” she said. “The kid's energy is infectious. They're just so free ... It's kind of lovely, it teaches us all to be a little more relaxed about things.”

She added that the theatre strives to make these shows affordable to provide everyone with the opportunity to participate in the fun.

Single show tickets are priced at $16 for all ages, and the three-performance pass is $33 per person.

You can snag your tickets by visiting the Trail Arts website or by visiting the box office at 1501 Cedar Ave. in Trail, open Monday to Friday, from noon until 4 p.m.
