Re. Jason Wolfe’s letter Fortis makes case for RNG (Castanet, Jan 10).
Oddly, FortisBC’s Jason Wolfe says renewable natural gas is low carbon. He and I agree that natural gas and RNG are chemically identical.
These two identical molecules, natural gas (methane) and RNG, are both made of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. When they are burned, identical emissions are produced. Decarbonization is not achieved by burning RNG instead of natural gas.
RNG is also expensive. Our gas bills—up 17% this month with only 1% RNG in gas pipes—will double by 2031 from RNG you can’t decline.
FortisBC promotes RNG because it makes its money from its gas pipes, from the nearly 10% guaranteed annual return on investment it receives from pipes in the ground. Far fewer new gas pipes are installed to electrified buildings, so FortisBC loses money.
To that end, FortisBC (Wolfe or a coworker) often attend city council meetings where electrification of new buildings is considered (in Richmond on Nov, 4, 2024, in Vancouver on Nov. 26, 2024), to promote RNG and cast doubt on electrification.
