Rutland Senior Secondary School evacuated due to fire

School dance up in smoke

UPDATE: Dec. 6, 2024 10:52 a.m.

The Crystal Ball didn't carry on after an unforeseen hiccup.

It was around 7:15 p.m. Thursday when fire crews were called to Rutland secondary school's Crystal Ball to douse a fire that started in the kitchen, Eric Grootendorst, Kelowna Fire Department assistant chief, said.

"The sprinkler activated and it mostly doused the fire and crews cleared the area," Grootendorst said.

The dance-goers had to evacuate briefly during the fire.

From there, the dance was cancelled, a parent reported.
