'Cutting edge disaster'

Re: 'Heart-wrenching to watch' (Castanet, March 31)

On July 13, 2023, UBCO issued a news release to celebrate a groundbreaking to “deepen” UBCO’s roots in downtown Kelowna.

Groundbreaking, indeed. The same release announced it would set a record as the deepest parkade in the Kelowna area.

Clearly, at either the engineering stage or construction stage, significant mistakes were made. Given the depth of the four-story parkade, it is a wonder the City of Kelowna was unwilling, as a last-ditch preventative solution to this catastrophe, to either waive some of the parking to improve the structural integrity of the envelope, or allow a conventional parking podium, as seen with other towers in Kelowna.

The consequences for some of the most vulnerable in our community are significant.

Eighty four people have had their lives disrupted with a forced relocation. Other buildings, like the (nearby Royal Canadian) Legion, have been cracked and rendered uninhabitable.

I look forward to learning more about who is accountable for this "cutting edge" disaster.

Davis Kyle, Kelowna
