Whistler shelter dog is now 'in the arms of an angel' — adoptee Sarah McLachlan

Puppy love for McLachlan

Sarah McLachlan doesn't just sing the songs, she walks the walk—at least when it comes to the causes she's passionate about.

The Halifax-born, Vancouver-based singer-songwriter who is arguably as well-known for her heart-wrenching Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) commercials as she is for her iconic ballads recently welcomed an adorable new addition to her family, straight from local animal shelter Whistler Animals Galore (WAG).

The mixed-breed puppy from the shelter's "nut litter" was originally brought to WAG in November, alongside her mom Macadamia and her nine siblings, by a concerned citizen who spotted the stray pups outside of Williams Lake.

"Hazelnut, now Tallulah lucked out big time with her forever family," WAG staff wrote in a social media post. "[S]he gains a new sister Poppy [the chocolate lab McLachlan brought home in 2015] to show her how to dog. She also gets a family that has some amazing animal advocates and a mom to always serenade her with a song or two!

"We are so happy you found each other and can't wait to see how she grows!" the post added.

McLachlan is no stranger to the resort: she reportedly purchased property in Whistler's Stonebridge neighbourhood in 2003, where she frequently spent time before selling the luxury, custom-built home and 4.3-acre (1.7-hectare) estate for $11.5 million in 2021.

The three-time Grammy winner's two-minute ad for the SPCA began airing back in 2006. It featured her song "Angel" playing over images of some very sad-looking dogs and cats, interspersed with sobering statistics about animal abuse rates and a short appeal for donations from McLachlan herself. According to the New York Times, that pitch raised about $30 million for the organization in its first two years on the air. She followed that up with a second ad for the 2008 holiday season, set instead to her rendition of "Silent Night."

If you plan on watching the Super Bowl this Sunday, you just might see McLachlan grace your screen again. The singer is set to appear in a Busch Light ad where she offers to help the beer company's rugged spokesperson find “shelter” in the great outdoors, "for just dollars a day."
