Man turns himself in after confronting, using gay slur against young couple

Suspect turns himself in

Vancouver police identified a suspect in an incident involving offensive and homophobic comments towards a young couple.

The incident took place near Burrard SkyTrain Station in downtown Vancouver on Jan. 29 and was caught on video, which went viral on social media.

In the footage of the incident, once the couple was at street level, a man can be seen and heard screaming at the pair for several minutes, at one point using an anti-gay slur.

The 34-year-old suspect, a Chilliwack resident, turned himself in to the Vancouver Police Department Hate Crime investigators Thursday morning. He was arrested for his role in the alleged crime and for an unrelated firearms offence.

Charges have not yet been formally laid and the man has been released pending a court appearance on Mar. 29.
