Shuswap pianist to perform

Pianist Jaeden Izik-Dzurko, 23, will perform Sergei Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto with the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra (OSO) in February. Born and raised in Salmon Arm, Izik-Dzurko is winning international piano competitions and making a name for himself in the classical music world.

OSO Music Director Rosemary Thomson predicts that Izik-Dzurko "will raise the roof" with his performance of the challenging concerto, which was popularized in the movie "Shine." New York Concert Review's Frank Daykin describes Izik-Dzurko as having "one of the most refined tonal palettes" he has ever heard.

Izik-Dzurko holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Juilliard School and is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree at UBC. He has won several international competitions and has received numerous honors, including being a Grand Prize winner at the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals' National Competition and a Laureate of the Cochran International Piano Competition.

Despite his international success, Izik-Dzurko still considers Salmon Arm his home. He has strong ties to the OSO and is one of three soloists featured on their recording "Canadian Soundscapes."

The OSO's performance, "Musical Giants," will also feature the return of the traditional OSO/OSYO Side-by-Side performance. The young musicians of the Okanagan Symphony Youth Orchestra will join the OSO to perform Richard Wagner's overture to Die Meistersinger. The program will open with the overture to "Russlan & Ludmilla," followed by works by American composer Florence Price and Vancouver-based composer Jeffrey Ryan.

Due to ongoing repairs at the Vernon & District Performing Arts Centre, the performance will take place at Trinity United Church, 3300 Alexis Park Drive. Current ticket holders will receive a new ticket for the venue.
