Charges approved in two homicides in Fort Ware

Charges in two homicides

RCMP have confirmed a pair of recent homicides in Tsay Keh Dene-Kwadacha detachment.

In an email to the Citizen, North District RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson said Monday that two people have been charged - one with manslaughter and the other with second-degree murder - and that both incidents involved individuals in domestic relationships.

"The community is in the healing process and the RCMP are working closely with community leaders," Saunderson said. "There is no further risk to the public."

Dates of the incidents and names of the accused and the victims were not provided.

"Both investigations are ongoing  and no further details are available at this time. More information may be released as it becomes available," Saunderson added.

In a message to the Citizen, a source said both homicides occurred in Fort Ware, a small community north of the Williston Reservoir, and home to the Kwadacha Nation.

Kwadacha Nation community leaders were not immediately available for comment on Monday.

Manslaughter implies the perpetrator did not intend to kill the victim and second-degree murder implies the act was carried out on impulse rather than having been planned.
