Kelowna siblings land spot on BC skating team ahead of Canada games

Siblings to skate for BC

Two Kelowna speed skaters have been named to represent British Columbia at the 2023 Canada Winter Games.

Siblings Calla Haaheim and Erik Haaheim were named to the Team BC's Short-Track Speed Skating team after facing competition against 40 other skaters from across the country during the 2022 Canadian Championships back in October. It was made official this month.

Calla recently entered the BC Cup Short Track race held in Richmond, winning the 500 metre, the 1,500 metre, and the points race to win the BC Cup overall event.

Erik Haaheim didn’t compete at the BC Cup, and instead raced at his fourth national event of the season, Canada Cup #1 in Montreal. Erik placed 35th overall and gained more experience racing against some of the rivals that will be joining him at the 2023 Canada Winter Games.

The two competitors have joined forces, preparing for the event inside Calgary's Olympic Oval Elite Pathway training centre under Olympic Oval coach Elizabeth Ward.

“To compete at the Canada Winter Games is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for athletes and the fact that both Calla and Erik were capable of pre-qualifying themselves onto the team through their achievements at the Short Track Canadian Championships this past fall is a testament to their hard work and dedication to the sport. I am confident they will leave their mark in PEI and achieve great things," said Ward.

Erik and Calla will join eight other team members from around the province to complete the team of 10.

The 2023 Canada Winter Games takes place in PEI between February 18 and March 5.
