High winds, fallen trees close some runs at Silver Star

High winds, fallen trees

The fallout from a mid-month dump of wet snow that downed numerous trees continues to be felt at SilverStar Mountain Resort.

In a statement on its website, the resort said the Alpine Meadows chair and terrain are closed today, "due to high winds and fallen trees."

That follows closure of the mountain's backside terrain and upper Nordic trails on Wednesday for danger tree mitigation.

On. Jan 16, the resort said the 25-centimetre snowfall brought down "hundreds of trees," creating "challenging conditions."

Mild temperatures and heavy snow load "caused hundreds of trees to snap or fall over completely... This has created numerous unmarked hazards throughout our 3,282 acres of skiable terrain," the resort said at the time.

Despite this, there's still plenty of skiable terrain open for powder hounds.

There are 107 of 132 trails open, and nine of 10 lifts.

On the cross-country side, 38 of 41 trails are open.

It's currently zero C on the mountain under cloudy conditions.
