Flu season emptying schools across the North Okanagan

Flu leaves empty desks

One-quarter of North Okanagan school students are away sick.

School District 22 Supt. Christine Perkins says as many as 25 per cent of their student population has been calling in sick lately.

"When parents call in, they are reporting their children either have COVID, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) or the flu," says Perkins.

Regarding the flu, "that's a big one right now," says Perkins.

On the staffing side, absenteeism is ranging between 10 and 15 per cent on any given day.

While the numbers of staff and students out sick changes month over month and differs during cold and flu season, Perkins says normal student absenteeism rates are closer to 10 per cent.

She encourages parents to have their children vaccinated if they haven't done so already.
