Tourney tees up funds

The inaugural Okanagan Indian Band Charity Golf Tournament raised $135,701 towards the construction of a Cultural Immersion School.

The tournament at The Rise Golf Course in Vernon, drew more than 130 golfers from across BC.

Proceeds from the tournament will go to the OKIB to assist with building the nk?maplqs i? snm?am? áy a?tn i? k?l sqilx?t?t (Head of the lake Where our Children Go to Learn our Indigenous Ways) cultural immersion school.

“Our targeted fundraising goals for the Cultural Immersion School exceed $20-million dollars, and with two months of planning we were able to surpass our goal to raise $100,000 at the golf tournament. We are excited to make this an annual tournament and plan to host the next annual tournament next September 2023,“ said the OKIB and OKIB Group of Companies Golf Committee in a statement.

“We cannot thank the donors and sponsors enough for their unwavering support to the Cultural Immersion School which is so needed in our community. Our children are currently in old, overcrowded buildings, and your generosity will enable us to get the construction started that much sooner,” said OKIB Economic Development Director Brad Callihoo.

The dream of having a cultural school rooted in sqilx? ways of life became a reality on Sept. 7 2006.

The opening of the school was reliant on the determination, co-operation and support of OKIB elders, parents, educators and community members. The educational experience at nk?maplqs i? snm?am?ay?a?tn i? k?l sqilx?t?t is unique and provides the opportunity for students to excel in sqilx? cultural and language learning.

Teachers and instructors plan the academic and sqilx? programs meeting and exceeding provincial curriculum standards, connecting curriculum to sqilx? cultural perspectives. The school offers a student-centered approach to teaching and learning based on individual student strengths and interests.
