The City of Vernon is expected to pursue provincial grant money to bolster its flood mitigation plan.

The city recently completed a flood mapping, risk analysis and mitigation project for BX Creek and Vernon Creek.

The study identified several structural mitigation recommendations, including increasing creek capacity at the 43rd Street crossing of Vernon Creek, located upstream of the Vernon Water Reclamation Centre.

The estimated cost to upgrade the creek crossing is $3,500,000.

Council will discuss on Monday applying to the provincial Adaptation, Resilience and Disaster Mitigation Program, administered by the Union of BC Municipalities.

Communities can apply for 73.33% of eligible flood mitigation costs, up to $10 million.

That would equal $2,555,000 for the Vernon project, with the city funding the remaining 27% ($945,000) of the project costs.

The project would be proposed as part of the city's 2024 financial plan.

Grant applications are due Oct. 7, and a council resolution to support the grant application is required.
