The Regional District of North Okanagan is advising water users of possible issues at two water supplies.
Customers supplied by the Mabel Lake Water Utility (MLW) and Grindrod Water Utility (GRW) are being warned the water supply will be impacted by a planned BC Hydro power outage Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The power outage could be extended if unforeseen circumstances arise.
During the power outage, water use will only be supplied by stored water in the water tanks. It is suggested that users store a short-term water supply for cooking and toilet use before the interruption to minimize the use from the tank storage.
If the tanks are drained, a water quality advisory or boil water notice will need to be issued. Customers will be notified of an advisory via sandwich boards in the community.
When the water service has been restored, MLW users may experience some cloudiness and/or air in the water. Users are advised to run a cold water tap closest to where the water enters your residence at low volume until the water has cleared.
GRW customers will be on a water-quality advisory as of Saturday until sampling can confirm the safety of the supply.
The advisory is being issued due to depressurization of the distribution pipes during a power outage that increases the risk of back siphonage, which has the potential to introduce contaminants or untreated water into the distribution system.
Until the advisory is rescinded, customers, especially young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems, may choose to boil their water for at least one minute when using for consumption purposes.
