Local softball player wins gold at Canada Summer Games

Kelowna's new golden girl

A Kelowna softball player is off to Salt Lake City after cleaning up the competition for Team BC.

Ry Binne, 18, and her teammates had a season to remember this summer. Binne was selected for Team BC as a shortstop, and her team went on to win provincial gold and a spot at the Canada Summer Games in Niagara Falls.

In Ontario, Team BC took home gold. The team defeated Quebec 10 - 0 on Friday in the gold-medal game.

Binne also won gold this year at the Canada Cup and Canadian Nationals.

The fun doesn't stop there for though. Now Binne's off to Salt Lake City where she has earned a scholarship to attend Salt Lake Community College, where her proud father says she hopes to catch the eyes of Division 1 scouts.

“She was also named the Canadian Sport School Scholar-Athlete of the Year. It has been an incredible year for this high-level, female athlete,” said her dad, Scott Binne.

Binne was the only player on the gold-medal winning Team BC to hail from the Interior.
