Large police presence on Bernard Avenue

RCMP swarm Bernard Ave

UPDATE: 9:55 p.m.

A neighbour from across the street tells Castanet that police were knocking on doors and telling people to go into their basements.

The neighbour says they witnessed the man jump out a window and attempt to flee the scene. That's when the neighbour says police managed to take him down and resolve the matter.

None of this has been confirmed by the police, who said earlier that the situation was handled in a peaceful matter.

UPDATE: 7:54 p.m.

RCMP have confirmed that shortly after 4:00 p.m. the Kelowna detachment received a call of a disturbance in the 1300 block of Bernard Avenue involving a distraught male.

Kelowna RCMP Frontline members and specialized units responded, resulting in road closures on Bernard.

The situation has since been resolved peacefully.

ORIGINAL:

At least 10 police cars have swarmed a house on Bernard Avenue.

Castanet received several news tips saying there was a large police presence near the street's 1400 block.

It is unclear at this time why the RCMP are active on Bernard, but the police have the road completely blocked at both ends, detouring traffic away from the scene.

According to a passerby, the police have been at the scene since roughly 4:00 p.m.

Castanet has reached out to the RCMP for comment and will update the story when more information becomes available.
