Hwy 1 reopens after slides

Highway 1 has reopened between Lytton and Spences Bridge.

It was closed after mudslides came down on the route during strong thunderstorms and heavy rain on Wednesday night.

One of the slides happened east of Nicomen and a woman shared video with Castanet of vehicles driving over a layer of mud and debris before crews closed the road. Other images from the scene showed a tractor-trailer stuck in the mud.

DriveBC says while Highway 1 is open again in both directions between the Junction of Highway 12 and the Junction of Highway 8, drivers should watch for traffic control and debris and drive with caution.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure noted that the isolated heavy rain that caused the slides on Wednesday evening had not been in the forecast.
