Cabbie caught in the crossfire of suspected targetted daylight shooting in a busy Surrey strip mall parking lot that left passenger dead

Cabbie and passenger shot

An area around a strip mall in the Guildford neighbourhood of Surrey is cordoned off after a deadly daylight shooting.

Surrey RCMP says that at approximately 2:20 p.m. they received reports of shots fired at a taxi in a parking lot of a shopping centre in the 14800 block of 108 Avenue.

Responding officers determined that both men inside the cab had been shot. The passenger died at the scene, while the taxi driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been called to the scene.

“Initial indications are that this was a targeted incident with the 30-year-old deceased man being known to police,” says Surrey RCMP media relations officer, Corporal Vanessa Munn. “This daytime shooting in a strip mall parking lot demonstrated a complete disregard for the safety of others and resulted in serious injuries to a taxi driver.”

IHIT is working with Surrey RCMP and the area surrounding the scene will be cordoned off for an undetermined amount of time while investigators gather evidence.

Anyone with further information who has not already spoken to police is asked to contact the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email at [email protected].
