Vernon council to debate amenities for future Kin Racetrack park

Future of Kin site on table

Vernon city council will debate the future of the Kin Racetrack lands on Monday.

On the table are two concept options – one that includes a new Active Living Centre, and the other a park plaza as an alternate anchor until a recreational facility can be built on the site.

Discussion of the matter was deferred at council's last meeting so that all councillors could be present.

"It's an important project. We've already committed $10 million to this, plus $2 million from others, and I don't think we should proceed until everybody’s here," Coun. Akbal Mund said at the time.

Council will review feedback from the first round of public engagement, including a community survey.

A second round of engagement and refinement of the concepts is expected by mid-March.

The site comprises 32 acres (19.2 hectares) and would include walking trails, ice surfaces, sports amenities, a dog park, and ?affordable housing, while putting aside land for the new rec centre.

A referendum on the Active Living Centre will be held in conjunction with the municipal election this fall.

The survey on site uses was conducted between Nov. 22 and Dec. 18. It received 2,988 responses.

Respondents showed support for the core uses such as sports fields, an outdoor skating surface, dog park and walking trails.

Top summer activities included a spray park, running/walking track or trail, picnic areas, green space and food trucks. Top winter activities included an outdoor skating rink, outdoor skating trail, event and festival areas, outdoor walking track or trail, off-leash dog area and snow play.

Suggestions also included a nod to lndigenous history and honouring the horse history of the site.

While the survey did not ask specifically about affordable housing, 49 comments mentioned the subject – 39% were against, and 61% supportive.
