Penticton fire chief seeking council support for Emergency Operations Centre grant application

Seeking EOC grant support

The Penticton fire chief is seeking city council's support in their application for grant funding to pay for equipment, supplies and training for the city's Emergency Operations Centre.

The EOC is activated when needed to coordinate emergency response and recovery actions during events like wildfires or flooding. Fire Chief Larry Watkinson is the emergency program coordinator.

Grant funding from the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) can go a long way to supporting the ever-changing and sometimes unpredictable needs of the EOC.

Watkinson hopes for council's support on their application for $25K in funding, which is on top of $75K already received in the past from the UBCM.

"[It] will allow for the improvement and capacity of the City of Penticton EOC for increased preparedness and ability to respond to emergency incident," Watkinson wrote in his application to council.

Council will discuss the matter at their regular meeting Tuesday. Historically, council has wholeheartedly supported such requests.
