Man swings hatchet at owner when confronted in vehicle

Hatchet wielder arrested

A man was arrested after allegedly swinging a hatchet at another man in downtown New Westminster.

New Westminster Police Department say a man called 911 shortly after midnight on Tuesday, claiming he had found someone in his vehicle.

When confronted, the individual swung a hatchet at the owner before fleeing.

Police say the victim followed the suspect as he ran away.

Officers located a man fitting the suspect’s description hiding in bushes near the Fraser River and arrested him without incident.

“We’re glad the caller was not hurt in this instance and made the right decision by calling 911 when they saw this crime in progress,” NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar said in a press release.

Police are recommending charges of assault with a weapon, mischief under $5,000, and theft under $5,000.
