Highway 3 closed east of Princeton as a foot of water floods the roadway

Hwy 3 closed by flood

Highway 3 has closed east of Princeton as water overcomes the road between the town and Hedley.

One Princeton resident has evacuated her property roughly 12 kilometres east of town for a second time.

"[Water] is coming into my property right now," Marcie Roberts shared. "We left last night because we knew this was coming."

DriveBC reports flooding between Taylor Way and Old Hedley Road. An assessment is in progress.

A detour for light vehicles is available via Old Hedley Road, but there is no detour for commercial vehicles. A travel advisory was previously issued through the area.

Roberts said their family decided to leave early this time around, hoping to avoid walking through waist deep water once again to get out.

"When we left with the three cats, three dogs and I have three kids that live with me. We had to pull all the dogs and [cats] out in a boat."

Her property remains on evacuation alert at this time, not an order.

Roberts came back to grab a few items from her home on Wednesday morning when she noticed the foot of water already across the highway.

She shared the picture and information to social media, hoping to let drivers know to be careful and steer clear of the area if they can.

"The biggest frustration is because the RDOS has not put us on evacuation order, we do not qualify for any sort of assistance. And this happened to all of us residents two weeks ago, when the big flood came. We were not on evacuation order. So we didn't qualify for any help."
