TNRD issues new evacuation order for Brookmere due to log jam

Evacuations due to log jam

A “significant log jam” near Brookmere has prompted a new evacuation order for the small community south of Merritt.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District issued the order on Tuesday afternoon.

“A significant log jam has been observed by provincial staff approximately two kilometres upstream from the community of Brookmere,” the TNRD said in announcing the order.

“Given the weather forecast and the potential for increased water levels, there is concern that this log jam could be dislodged and carried downstream in to Brookmere, where it could cause further damage.”

Fifty properties are included in the evacuation order, including addresses on Brookmere Station Road, Caboose Lane, Coldwater Rod, Conductor Way, Engineer Avenue, Railway Drive and Roundhouse Drive.

Brookmere is located about 45 kilometres south of Merritt, just off the Coquihalla Highway.

Evacuees from Brookmere are being asked to find shelter with friends or family. Those unable to do so are being sent to Kelowna, where an emergency reception centre is set up at Willow Park Church, 438 Highway 33.
