Taking her cake to Food TV

Kelowna cake creator Kathie Dionne is about to make her debut on Food Network Canada.

After years of saying no, she finally agreed to appear on an episode of The Big Bake: Halloween.

“I think that I’m just known for large, detailed cakes, 3D cakes,” said Dionne.

“The first time they contacted me was years ago, I’d done a large, sculpted cake. And then they contacted me again last year after I had done a very large and elaborate Marie Antoinette cake for the Kelowna Actors Studio.

"From there they just kept harassing me. I think it’s just social media. I think the power of social media, I was found and they decided that they wanted me.”

However, she had to find someone to help because The Big Bake is a team competition.

“I brought my good friend Joanne [Beloin]. I’ve known her from way back when we started taking a Michael’s cake decorating course together. She’s a great baker and there’s not really anybody else on this planet that I would trust with my recipes. So I brought her in and she excelled and brought everything to fruition,” said Dionne.

“Then I also brought in my good cake-comrade Kaleena [Van Den Born]. She’s a retired cake decorator and has huge talent in her own right, so it just made sense to ask her if she wanted to come along for the ride."

Kathie can’t say where they placed on the show, but it wasn’t a cakewalk.

“It was a lot! It’s for real. You know there’s challenges that you run into by not being in a familiar kitchen, not your familiar tools. I always say, you know, I do good work and I do fast work. There’s always elements that are out of your control, and it’s reality TV so there’s that to be said, but it was a lot of fun. I would do it again and it was just a great experience.”

The new season of The Big Bake: Halloween premiere’s Monday, Sept. 27, 2021, on Food Network Canada, and Kathie’s episode will air sometime in October.
