The Queen's Gambit creator Scott Frank has ruled out a second season of the hit show.
The program enjoyed massive success at the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, taking home 11 of the 18 awards it was nominated for.
However, in the press room at the ceremony, Scott was asked about rumours that there would be another helping of the series, which starred Anya Taylor-Joy as chess prodigy Beth Harmon.
"I'm so sorry. I hate disappointing anyone, but no," he responded. "I feel like we told the story we wanted to tell, and I worry - let me put it differently - I'm terrified that if we try to tell more, we would ruin what we've already told.
"I'll never say never, but I feel so good about what we did, I would hate to soil the memory."
Following Scott's remarks, executive producer William Horberg revealed that the team who made the show are looking at reuniting on a different project.
"We're all certainly going to keep working together and try to find another story to tell with the same passion and team of amazing artists," he said, to which Anya replied, "Absolutely."
Despite The Queen's Gambit not returning for a second outing, another much-loved series looks like it may well enjoy another chapter - Mare of Easttown.
Speaking after taking home the Best Actress in a Limited Series award for her role as Mare in the show, Kate Winslet said: "Conversations are happening, but I think until scripts are in place that we can really respond to, and know what a full story of a season two might be and where Mare goes."
