Early-morning hit and run kills E-bike cyclist on Trans-Canada in Dallas; police seek witnesses

Fatal crash a hit and run

UPDATE: 1:40 p.m.

Police are hoping tips from the public will help them track down a suspect in a hit and run Tuesday on the Trans-Canada Highway in Dallas that left an E-bike cyclist dead.

Emergency crews were called to a westbound stretch of highway near Pineridge Golf Course at about 5:45 a.m. for a report of a crash with injuries. Mounties arrived on scene to find one person dead.

“Police were alerted to the incident after two motorists travelling in the westbound lane of the highway noticed a blinking light ahead,” RCMP Const. Crystal Evelyn said.

“The motorists pulled over to investigate and discovered a deceased man near an E-bike with a flashing light.”

Evelyn told Castanet the deceased was hit by a vehicle, and Mounties are looking to track down the driver responsible.

"He was struck by a vehicle — that we know," she said.

"We're looking to locate whatever vehicle is responsible for striking him."

Evelyn said Mounties are looking to talk to any witnesses who saw the E-bike travelling prior to the collision, anyone who stopped to help or any drivers that might have dash-cam footage.

“At that time of the morning, it was still quite dark,” she said.

“If anyone thinks they saw the man or the flashing light on his E-bike, was driving in the area prior to that time or has any information that could help with the investigation in any way, please let us know.”

Evelyn said the victim had long black hair, a black jacket and dark blue pants.

Anyone with information can call police at 250-828-3000.
