More snow could fall this weekend at higher elevations

Snow could fall higher up

Those looking to travel across high-elevation mountain passes this weekend should be prepared to encounter snowy conditions.

While B.C.'s coast is getting hammered with rain Friday, the Okanagan is expected to see between five and 10 millimetres through Friday night.

But the precipitation could fall as snow at higher elevations both Friday and Saturday night, with freezing levels expected to drop as low as 1,700 metres. The Pennask Summit on the Okanagan Connector sits at 1,728 metres.

“It's just a reminder that we might want to start thinking about winter tires if we're heading into the higher terrain, it's just the start,” said Lundquist.

The Connector and the Coquihalla got hit with some snow earlier this week, with the white stuff falling both Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Friday's storm is bringing strong winds to the Penticton area, which Lundquist says could make their way up to Kelowna during the evening. Thunderstorms are also a possibility Friday and Saturday evening in the Okanagan.

But after a somewhat chilly weekend, with overnight lows dropping to 5 C at the Valley bottom, the sun is expected to bring warmer temperatures next week, with highs in the low 20s.
