Kamloops mountain biker earns top-20 Olympics finish months after childbirth

Pendrel places 18th in Tokyo

The Tournament Capital's Catharine Pendrel, who gave birth to her first child earlier this year, placed 18th out of 38 riders Tuesday in the women’s cross country mountain biking event in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Summer Games.

The 40-year-old rider finished about eight minutes behind the gold medal winner from Switzerland, Jolanda Neff.

The Swiss completed a sweep of the podium in the event.

Pendrel announced her pregnancy in September, gave birth to her daughter in January and was back on her bike when the World Cup circuit resumed in May.

She was the top Canadian in Tuesday's race, placing 11 spots ahead of Haley Smith of Ontario.
