Hungry Kamloops burglar helps himself to family's refrigerator before stealing their car, police say

Burglar eats food, steals car

Police think they’ve caught a hungry burglar who broke into a North Kamloops home last weekend and helped himself to food from the fridge before stealing a car.

RCMP Sgt. Darren Michels said Mounties were called at about 6:30 a.m. on Saturday by residents of a house on Sydney Avenue.

“The homeowner said that while his family was sleeping, a suspect was able to gain entry to their home through an unlocked basement door,” he said.

“Once inside, the suspect quietly stole several valuable items, vehicle keys, and ate food from the refrigerator before departing the residence in the family vehicle.”

A few hours later, Michels said, police were called to a stretch of Beach Avenue for a report of two men passed out in a suspicious vehicle — which turned out to be the one stolen from Sydney Avenue.

Michels said a 55-year-old Kamloops man who is known to police was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property. He was later released on a promise to appear in court.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information can call police at 250-828-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
