Vernon Aquatic Centre to shut down for up to six weeks for maintenance and repairs

Pool closure extended

The Vernon Aquatic Centre will shut down this Sunday for up to six weeks.

“Each year, the aquatic centre is closed for a few weeks so major maintenance projects can be completed with as little disruption to the public as possible,” says City of Vernon recreation services director Doug Ross. “Normally the shutdown is about three weeks. However, this year the pool will be closed for approximately five to six weeks while the leisure pool air handling unit is replaced and warranty work is completed on the pool filters, both of which are much larger undertakings than previous years’ projects.”

The annual shutdown usually begins at the end of August, but in order to have the air handling unit installed during the hottest part of the summer season and operational in time for August, the project is being started mid-June.

Staff are also hoping that capacity can soon be increased in the pool as pandemic restrictions begin to be ease.

Therefore, the city is taking steps to complete the annual maintenance as early as possible so it is ready to re-welcome guests when health officials say it is safe to do so.
