2 BC dogs best in show

Two German shepherd siblings from B.C. were honoured this weekend at the most prestigious dog show in the world.

The 145th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show took place from June 12 to June 13 in Tarrytown, New York, showcasing the most impressive pooches from around the world.

Approximately 2,500 dogs from 206 breeds participated in the event and a Pekingese named Wasabi won the top honour of the night: "Best In Show."

Two German shepherds from Woodside German Shepherds in Aldergrove were honoured at the event.

Woodside's Arabella was named "Best in Breed" while her sister Bella Jun was the "Select Bitch." Arabella also placed fourth overall for the "Herding Group."

Last year, Bella Jun was awarded Best of Opposite Sex at the annual competition.

In order to qualify for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, all entries must be qualified American Kennel Club champions. In order to qualify to compete in Best in Show, Best of Breed winners must compete in the group competitions.

According to the the Westminster Kennel Club, "Each breed falls into one of seven groups: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, and Herding. Four placements are awarded in each group."

Due to New York COVID-19 regulations impacting the allowable number of attendees at events, Westminster’s 2021 events were not open to spectators or vendors.
