Vancouver island man stops to help at crash, thief steals his truck

Stops to help, truck stolen

Darren Campbell had a shock early Monday when his truck, a 2006 Dodge Cummins Laramie, was stolen after he stopped to offer help in Cowichan Bay.

He said on Facebook that he was on his way home from work about 5:20 a.m. when saw a vehicle in the ditch. The car looked to be badly damaged, he said.

“Lights flashing, horn is going off,” he said. “Thinking I’m going to find a body in this vehicle.”

Campbell said he put his hazard lights on and got out “expecting the worst.”

That’s when it happened.

“Heard my truck start up and look at the guy in my driver’s seat with a black mask on. Make eye contact with him. Then he speeds away, stealing my truck.”

The strange set of circumstances was tough to take.

“If I had any luck it would be all bad luck,” Campbell said. “Like are you kidding me? Try to be a Good Samaritan and my $20,000 truck gets stolen right under my nose.”

The truck was found later in the day.

Campbell said he would still stop and try to help if he found himself in the same situation again.
