It's about time

At last the BC Government and especially Mike Farnsworth has shown some courage and support for the general public in applying “Refuse to Issue” to the re-application for a driver’s license or vehicle license renewal to those fines issued under “ Covid-19” rules.

This should be applied to all fines issued by a Provincial or Municipal Body in the application of the law. Municipalities are part on the province and if unpaid parking or speeding or vehicle infraction tickets are not paid then there should be other consequences. At the present moment in time tickets are issued and if they are not paid nothing is done. It becomes a backlog of paperwork for the authorities with no action.

Neither the police nor the Bylaw officers are able to enforce the myriad of bylaws that municipalities pass to improve the life of Joe Public and the thefts continue and the graffiti continues and the violence continues and the refusal to follow the law continues ad infinitum.

Currently, ICBC can refuse to renew or issue a driver's license for outstanding fines issued under the Motor Vehicle Act and the Liquor Control and Licensing Act. Expand this to cover other Acts.

Today one of Castanet’s headlines echoed the “State of Siege” in Kamloops. The pendulum has swung so far to one side that where there was once respect for the authority in the family and the authority in service to the population that today there is nothing but distain. We are fortunate that this is only a small but vocal minority of us all.

British Columbia must step up to the plate. I hope some politicians read this.

Michael Henderson, Kelowna.
