Highway 3 back open after avalanche control work in the Kootenay Pass has finished

Highway 3 has finished its avalanche work ahead of schedule and is back open in both directions.

The road has cleared between West Avalanche Gate and East Avalanche Gate in the Kootenay Pass.


UPDATED: 6:30 p.m.

Highway 3 is running with single lane alternating traffic as avalanche control work continues between West Avalanche Gate and East Avalanche Gate for 18 km.

Travellers through the Kootenay Pass area are asked to watch for traffic control.

DriveBC stated to expect delays up to 20 minutes in the area.

Work is estimated to continue until 9 p.m.

Highway 3 is closed in both directions for ongoing avalanche control activity at Kootenay Pass.

According to Drive BC, the work is underway between West Avalanche Gate and East Avalanche Gate for an 18-km stretch.

Work is expected to continue until 9 p.m.

An alternate route detour is available for motorists to use from Nelson to Creston by Highway 3A and the Kootenay Lake Ferry. Travel time is estimated at 2.5 hours.
