Vancouver Island driver goes through police roadblock twice - flees both times

Driver fled roadblock twice

A driver in the Ladysmith area made two visits to a roadblock — even though he had disobeyed police and took off the first time.

On his first pass, the driver stopped as requested, but then drove away when asked to pull to the side of the road, RCMP say.

He then returned, this time stopping just long enough to hand his driver’s licence to the officer before again fleeing.

Instead of risking a pursuit, the officer simply filled out a high-risk driver report based on what he had seen and went to the man’s home a few days later.

The man was given several violation tickets and a four-month driving prohibition.

Cpl. Mike Halskov of B.C. RCMP Traffic Services said such reports are directed at drivers who exhibit “concerning” behaviour.

“Road Safety B.C. then has an adjudication board that has a look at the cases as they come in, and they make a determination whether or not a prohibition should be issued given the circumstances,” he said. “It’s a good system that’s been in effect for a number of years now.”
