Man with large sword draws swarm of police downtown Kelowna

Sword man draws police

A man armed with a large sword behaving erratically downtown Kelowna on Wednesday afternoon drew a massive police response.

Officers were called just after 1:30 p.m. after residents called 911 about the man.

Police flooded the area and located the suspect in the 1300-block of Ellis Street.

A 30-year-old Kelowna man was arrested without incident. Police say he was in possession of three knives and a large sword.

“Several other items that were also considered weapons, were located with the man’s belongings a short distance away from where he was apprehended,” said Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy.

After the man’s mental health was assessed by the Kelowna RCMP Police and Crisis Team, he was released on strict conditions on a promise to appear in court at a later date.

The investigation remains open.
