2019 Black Market Wine Co. The Syndicate

The Syndicate red blend

Wine: The Syndicate (red blend), 2018

Winery: Black Market Wine Co., Kaleden

Why drink it? The labels from this small winery are fitting with general mood of this year: the third eye, non-traditional design is, well, eye-catching. The Syndicate is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot, with the Merlot taking centre stage. Dark chocolate, currants, and red fruits on the nose, with hints of French oak treatment coming through in cigar box and cedar. Balanced body and flavours that carry through from the aromas, with some earthiness from the two Cabs, recognizable tannins that aren’t overly bold, but you may want to tuck this bottle away for a few years.

Pair with: Red meats, grilled or roasted, a beef and veggie stir fry, or a hearty lentil stew. Shepherd’s pie, or great with sausages from your favourite butcher, as well schnitzel or even oven-roasted eggplant. Goat cheeses will do nicely.

Price: $35

Music pairing: This Must Be the Place, Talking Heads
