Group of COVID-19 naysayers drove through the streets of Kamloops today honking their horns

Protesting virus restrictions

A group of people opposed to the province's COVID-19 restrictions are driving through the streets of Kamloops Saturday.

Around 20 cars drove down Seymour Street around noon, repeatedly honking their horns, hoping to draw attention to the big signs on their windows.

Signs read: "Open the economy" and "There is no pandemic," while another simply said "Merry Christmas."

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has imposed a number measures to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in the province, including restricting indoor social gatherings, mandating indoor mask wearing in public spaces and most recently, banning all adult team sports.

Despite this, restaurants and retail stores remain open.

B.C. has seen spiking cases across the province in recent weeks, as hospitalizations and deaths from the virus have also increased. In the past week alone, 97 British Columbians have died from COVID-19, including the first Interior long-term care home resident

Castanet has reached out to the organizers of the drive-by protest for comment. We will update this story when more information becomes available.
