Kamloops woman who has helped Santa write his letters for 35 years is back on the job

Santa's helper back at work

Meet Izzy McQueen: she's Santa’s helper in Kamloops.

McQueen helps the Big Guy reply to children’s letters.

Canada Post runs the program and recently contacted her with some bad news.

"Well, I got the phone call that they didn't need me anymore. Honestly, I was shocked. I was almost sick, you know? And I'm walking around here for days thinking, 'What the heck did I do wrong?'" McQueen tells Castanet.

The Kamloops woman has been helping Santa write his letters for 35 years and it’s something she looks forward to every December.

"This makes Christmas for me. Somebody said to me, 'You don't read every letter!' And I said, 'Oh yes we do!' I get up at 6 o'clock in the morning and do letters and do some at 11 o'clock at night."

Once McQueen's story about her letters went viral, Canada Post contacted her and immediately rectified the situation.

"Izzy, you've been reinstated!" McQueen recalls. "I don't know who it was that phoned; some man phoned and that's how I found out," she laughs.

It’s a Christmas miracle. McQueen will answer the little one’s questions after all.

"They (the kids) say, 'How does Santa fly in one night?' I said, 'You have to believe in magic.' I've said that all along," she explains.

Now Santa’s helper can continue writing to us kids, both big and small.

Castanet contacted Canada Post and asked why they made the decision to stop McQueen from writing the letters.

"While this annual tradition is limited to a volunteer team of employees and retirees, Izzy McQueen has been helping since the early days of the program. Given her years of volunteer service, we are pleased to name Izzy McQueen, of Kamloops, B.C., an Honourary Elf by order of the North Pole," replied Phil Legault in an email, Media Relations personnel at Canada Post.

"We reached out to Ms. McQueen on Tuesday this week to share the news. We apologize for the misunderstanding and hope she will continue to help Santa keep the magic of Christmas alive," he added.
